Friday’s Feast #144

Welcome to Friday’s Feast, a “buffet for your brain.”

List 3 emotions you experienced this week.

Sadness, anger, happiness.

Name a car you’d love to have.

That’s a hard one for me. I’m not into cars. I’m happy with my mini-van. 🙂

Describe your typical morning routine.

Wake up to the alarm clock; shower; take Synthroid; make my son’s school lunch if he is taking one that day; spend some time reading my Bible; make youngest son’s breakfast; get dressed and try to do something with hair; take son to school; come home and make my breakfast; eat breakfast while reading e-mail and blogs. After that it just depends on what other errands, duties, etc. are on the agenda for the day.

Main Course
Have you ever emailed someone famous? If so, who, and what did you say to them? Did they reply?

I have e-mailed the president and congressmen and senators concerning certain bills and issues. I do get a reply, but it is probably not personal in most cases, though Senator Jim DeMint is very good about following up a form response with a personal reply.

Do you listen to podcasts? If so, which ones?

No. I keep hearing about them but haven’t jumped on the bandwagon yet. There are already too many things to read and listen to to keep up with. But my oldest son listens to some and loves them.

Friday’s Feast #143

The Show and tell post is a couple below this one. 🙂

I haven’t Friday-Feasted in a while. These questions look interesting!

Tell about a time when you had to be brave.

I’ve had to be brave when my husband traveled out of town many times. When we were first married, if he was away and I came home in the evening, I would have to check every room and every closet to make sure no one was hiding in there waiting to get me. 😳 A rustle of leaves outside my window one night had me calling the landlord to come check for prowlers, when it was probably just a dog or squirrel passing by. I had to remind myself over and over that God was my protector, and I looked up verses about fear and read them or recited them over and over, (like Psalm 56:3, Isaiah 12:2, and Isaiah 41:10, to name a few). That helped immensely. Then I developed a couple of health problems that have netted about 5 ER visits between them. Then I was afraid not so much of prowlers but that something health-related would happen while he was away. Well, something did — I happened to be on the phone with Jim while he was away one night about 9 or 10 when an episode of supraventricular tachycardia began. None of the preliminary measure worked to get my heart rate to reset to a normal rhythm, so I called a friend who took me to the ER. Her husband offered to stay with the boys, but they seemed to be doing fine — my oldest was an older teen then and had watched the others before. My youngest was asleep, so he didn’t have to be frightened by anything. My friend came and took me to the ER and waited with me through the drill of receiving adenosine by iv (awful stuff!!) and being monitored to make sure everything was back to normal. The Lord showed me through all of that that He is the One taking care of me. Sometimes He uses Jim, sometimes others. I had to realized, too, that even if Jim was here if someone broke in or a health problem came up, there is only so much he could do — a prowler could overpower him, or a health problem be beyond his ability to help. I could die in bed next to him without him knowing it til morning. That might not sound very comforting! 🙂 But it just helped me realize that God is my ultimate protector. There are times I still experience fear and have to go over those verses, but it is not as paralyzing as it used to be.

Which upcoming movie are you excited about seeing?

We wait to see movies til they come out on DVD, so we’re a little behind, but we’re looking forward to Spiderman III, The new Fantastic Four film, the next Pirates of the Caribbean film (though the second one was disappointing). (Not a chick flick among them — can you tell I live with all males? 🙂 ) The DVD I am waiting for is Amazing Grace.

Name an item you try to always have on hand.

My cell phone.

Imagine the most relaxing room you can think of. Now describe it!

Soft blue or green walls, white trim, ceiling fan. comfy furniture.

On a scale of 1 to 10 (10 being highest), how spiritual or religious are you?

It depends on what is meant by “spiritual” or “religious.” I am not into New-Age type spirituality or religion just for the sake of religion, to compartmentalize that part of life or to be caught up in a system just for the sake of a system. I am a born-again Bible believer. I believe one enters into a relationship with God through His Son, Jesus Christ, who said, “Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me” (John 14:6). I believe that Jesus died to take our sins and their penalty on Himself, and that if we repent of our sins and we believe on Him as Lord and Savior, we are born again. We become new and we enter into a relationship with God as our Father that permeates every part of life. Our lives change as we read more of is Word and draw closer to Him and grow spiritually, and we try to do everything we do out of love for Him, in obedience to Him, and for His glory. So, with that understanding as a basis, I would say I’m a 10. 🙂

(Edited to add: As I visited some other Friday Feasters yesterday, some seemed to think it would be proud or self-promoting to give a high answer to this last question. I took this question to mean how important is spirituality to you, how much time and attention do you give it, etc., so I answered with a “10” in that vein, meaning that my relationship with the Lord is the highest priority in my life. I certainly didn’t mean to indicate I thought I was perfect, and I hope no one took it that way. 🙂 )

Friday’s Feast # 138

When you travel, which mode of transportation do you prefer?

This is a hard one because traveling is not my best thing. My stomach starts acting up before we even leave (which probably means it’s just nerves, but it is still a real and bothersome problem). So bathroom issues are an issue. In the car there is a problem of being able to find and get to one when needed. But air travel loses its appeal with having to get there so early, the restrictions of what you can take on, the often-delayed flights that bump your whole schedule out of kilter, the crowdedness of the seats, the expense. I just really don’t like to travel at all. 🙂 But for anything of great distance, at least with a plane the misery is over sooner.

Have you ever met a blogging friend in person?

No, not yet. I did meet a blogger online who I knew in real life first, but had lost touch with.

When was the last time you were really, really tired?

Somehow I get that way every Sunday afternoon. I guess my body is waiting to crash after the busy week.

Main Course
If you could have dinner with any one fictional character from a book or movie, who would it be?

I’ve been pondering this since last night. Though I am not totally satisfied with this answer, one would be Meg from Little Women. We’re a lot alike, so I think we’d have a nice visit.

Fill in the blank: One day, I hope to see _______________.

Grandchildren. It won’t be for several years yet, but I can’t wait!

What are you proud of?

My husband’s hard work to provide for his family, his strong work ethic to do a good job and not just fill time to punch the time clock, and his character.

What is the best thing you’ve ever won as a prize?

Gift certificates to restaurants.

Name something you do that is a waste of time.

Channel surfing the TV when I am bored. Occasionally I’ll stumble across something good that I hadn’t known was on, but usually it is a waste. I should put down the remote and pick up a book.

Main Course
In what year of your life did you change the most?

The year I became a Christian. I didn’t “act out” much as a kid — not enough nerve and too afraid of getting in trouble. But my heart became more what it ought to be as I read the Scriptures and I was more at peace than before, even in some of the most trying circumstances.

Where is a place you consider to be very tranquil?

There is something about being near calm water, whether at a lake or near the ocean, that’s very soothing and tranquil to me.

Friday’s Feast #136

I haven’t “feasted” in a while…

Who is your favorite news anchor/reporter? Why?

I don’t watch the news much any more, but when I did I liked to watch Tom Brokaw. Not sure why, really.

Name 3 foods that are currently in your freezer.

Ground turkey, chicken tenderloins, frozen corn.

If you were to have the opportunity to name a new town or city, what would you call it?

I’d have to know something about the town first — I think it’s neat if the name is reflective of some characteristic of the town. I do like descriptive names rather than names after people.

Main Course
What will most likely be the next book you read?

I just bought Forever by Karen Kingsbury tonight and I am itching to get to it, but I need to finish Sense and Sensibility first.

What’s the first thing you notice about the opposite gender?

I think I notice the eyes first of either gender.

Friday’s Feast #132

Welcome to Friday’s Feast, a “buffet for the brain.” 🙂

Where on your body do you have a scar, and what caused it?

I have a scar on my abdomen from gallbladder surgery about 21-22 years ago, a scar on my neck from thyroid surgery about 17 years ago, and a little scar under one eyebrow from chicken pox when I was a kid. Oh, and the scar on my arm from smallpox vaccinations that were mandatory when I was a kid.
What is something that has happened to you that you would consider a miracle?

Besides my salvation, some of the things I told about in more detail here — the provision to go to a Christian school, breaking down on a road trip and calling a random mechanic in the yellow pages who “just happened” to have bought out the dealership of the foreign car we had, so he had a wealth of parts for our car, narrowly averted car crashes.

Name a television personality who really gets on your nerves.

Well, I really, really hate to be negative here….so I think I’ll skip this one. 🙂

Main Course
What was a funny word you said as a child (such as “pasketti” for “spaghetti”)?

That was a long time ago. 😀 I don’t remember any, or any family stories of any.

Fill in the blank: I have always thought ______ was ______.

I have always thought chocolate was good. 😀

Friday’s Feast #130

Appetizer – Have you been sick yet this winter? If so, what did you come down with?

Had a cold for a few days last fall, but that’s it so far. My youngest is just coming down with one, though, so I hope it doesn’t make the rounds.

Soup – What colors dominate your closet?

Pink, blue, green.

Salad – How would you describe your personal “comfort zone”?

I am most comfortable in my own home with my family or close friends. I’m not comfortable with a lot of people or noise or commotion. I’m not a hugger to anyone outside my family and am not comfortable with anyone outside of my family touching me.

Main Course – On which reality show would you really like to be a contestant?

Hard to say. Some of the ones I like to watch, like the Amazing Race, I wouldn’t be able to keep up with physically. I like The Apprentice, but I’d probably melt under the first harsh criticism.

Dessert – Which holiday would you consider to be your favorite?

It would be between Christmas and Valentine’s Day.

Friday’s Feast # 129

Friday’s Feast is a “buffet for the brain,” designed to “feed your mind by asking thought-provoking, mind-stimulating questions.”

What was one of the fashion fads when you were a teenager?

Disco suits, leisure suits, bell-bottom pants, Gunne Sax dresses, blue chambray work-type shirts with embroidery on them (that’s more than one, I realize). Yes, I was a teen in the 70s.

Name one thing you think people assume about you when they first meet you.

Hmmm. I don’t know about now, but years ago friends told me that when they first met me, they thought I was stuck up. 😦 Actually I was just shy and quiet and didn’t know what to say. I think that’s probably the case with most people who are thought to be “stuck up.” The Lord’s helped me greatly in that area, but that’s my “default setting.”

On a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being highest, how hard do you work?

Well — I would like to say a consistent 10. But there are times I don’t work to capacity. It depends a lot on the task, the time and energy available, the interest level sometimes, etc. There are times it’s in the 8-10 level, and other times on the lower end of the scale — so I guess I’ll average it out and say maybe 6 or 7? This was a hard question for the brutally honest!

Main Course
If you were given a free 30-second commercial during the Super Bowl to sell anything you currently own, what would you advertise?

My digital camera, maybe.

Edited to add: I may have misunderstood this question. I was thinking of something I liked, that I considered valuable. But the question may mean something you want to get rid of. In that case — I don’t know if I have anything that the Super Bowl crowd would be interested. in. 🙂

Fill in the blank: I love to __sleep__ when it is ___raining___.

Friday’s Feast #127

Which television shows do you just refuse to miss?

Well, while I have a few favorites, I don’t think I’d refuse to miss any of them, though I might chafe at missing a couple.

Who did you last speak to on the telephone?

My husband last night.

How many pillows do you keep on your bed?

3: I use 1, my husband uses 2. We don’t have any little decorative ones there — neither of us wants to have to take those on and off each night and morning.

Main Course
Name one addition to your computer (software, hardware, etc.) that you’d love to have.

I just got some software for Christmas that I had been wanting for a long time, Microsoft Publisher. The next thing we might need is some more memory. There are probably a lot of cool things out there for the computer that I don’t even know about, but that’s probably just as well. 🙂

What is your favorite foreign food?

Friday’s Feast #126

What comes to mind when you see the color orange?

How much I dislike the color. 🙂 I think it is beautiful on leaves in the fall and I like pumpkins, oranges, and sweet potatoes. But I wouldn’t wear orange or use it in my decorating (except in small doses in the fall).

Did you ever get in trouble while you were in school? If so, what was it for?

One time, in first grade, several of us were throwing rocks at each other (why, I don’t know. It seemed like fun at the time) when I got hit in the head, started bleeding profusely, and had to be taken to the doctor. Afterward all of us had to write something like 100 times “I will not throw rocks.” I was quite indignant that I had to be punished since I had gotten hurt. 🙂

Which topping(s) make up your perfect pizza?

Pepperoni and sausage!!

Main Course
Do you believe in UFOs/aliens/etc.? Why or why not?

No. Biblically I don’t see any evidence of them. Someone remarked once that reportings of them have actually decreased with the advent of digital cameras, cell phone cameras, and video recorders — you’d think the opposite would be true. But it wouldn’t shake my faith to find that they are out there. It’s a big universe and God may have put planets and beings out there we don’t know about. 🙂

What color is your bedspread/comforter/quilt?

It’s a quilt with a white background and blue, pink, and green pieces.
