Works-For-Me Wednesday: Backwards Day

wfmwheader_4.jpgThere’s a twist to this week’s WFMW: we’re to ask for advice or tips rather than give any.

I know there are probably a few dozen things I could ask about, but there are only two that come to mind now that are current needs:

1) How do you get fingerprints and grime off walls without harming the latex paint? 409 and the Magic Eraser haven’t worked.

2) What ideas do you have for quick lunches or dinners? For instance, one of ours is to spread pizza sauce or Prego (or, most likely, I’ll sprinkle basil, oregano, minced onion, garlic powder, and Parmesan cheese into tomato sauce and use that) on English muffin halves, add a few slices of pepperoni, sprinkle with mozzarella or provolone, and bake til cheese melts. But I need some more ideas!

  1. My Aunt Pim used to make these for us for breakfast, lunch, OR dinner. We always thought they were delicious! In this recipe, I cut the butter in half, but you may want to add a little more per your preferences.

    German Pancakes

    4 eggs
    1/2 cup flour
    1/2 tsp. salt
    1 1/2 – 2 Tbsp. butter
    Powdered sugar
    Syrup

Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Melt butter in oven-safe pan. Mix dry ingredients and beat in eggs one at a time. When butter has melted, pour mixture into pan over butter and cook for ten minutes, or until lightly browned. Serve with powdered sugar and syrup (or jam).

  2. Our favorite quick meal is spaghetti and meatballs. About once a month my husband makes a BIG stock pot full of Italian Marinara sauce from scratch. We eat some that night, then portion off the rest into containers and throw them in the freezer.

The rest of the month, we have plenty of sauce to re-heat for spaghetti, pizza sauce, meatball sub sandwiches…you name it.

  3. Ohhhh! I had to clean off heavy pencil markings (courtesy of my almost 3 year old) off a painted wall recently, and i tried a damp cloth dabbed in washing powder which worked a treat. I don’t know what latex paint is though?

  4. One of our family favorite meals is Italian chicken.

Take your favorite frozen chicken parts, (leg/thigh combos work well), toss them into a deep pan (fry pan or sauce pan), dump a bottle of low fat italian dressing in, add 1/2 cup of water, cover and cook on med-high until the chicken is done. If you want, once the chicken is cooked, uncover and leave on low, letting the liquid cook out so that the chicken can brown up a bit. Serve with instant mashed potatoes and corn. My son loves it!

  5. Quesadillas are our quick family favorite. Just grated cheese, tortillas, meat and veggies if wanted, and make just like a grilled cheese. Only, don’t use butter. You shouldn’ need any kind of oil at all.

  6. We make Quesadillas a lot as well as quick been burritos (refried beans from a can , grated cheese, and tortillas. We also use tortillas to make quick pizzas–tortillas are great for all sorts of things–take any of your favorite sandwich fixings and throw them in. We also keep frozen mixed vegetables in the deep freeze (usually Chinese mixes) –steam or fry them with just a spot of oil, and throw those over some cooked rice or noodles. Another favorite in our house is slumgallion (as my mil named it when my husband was a kid) –throw some dry noodles, cooked meat (whatever you like, even sandwich meat works if i is chopped up)in with sauce (whatever sauce you prefer) with extra water–cook the whole thing down until the noodles are cooked adding in veggies if you want them–instant, one pan meal.

  7. If the finish of your paint isn’t compatible with the Magic Eraser, I just use a clean washcloth with REALLY hot water and dish soap. It works pretty well.

  8. Magic Eraser has always worked well for me . . . do you have flat wall paint? If so, good luck finding anything to help. Next time you paint, be sure to use an eggshell or satin finish 🙂

I post easy to fix meals in a complete meal plan every Monday. You might also get some ideas over at Laura’s, The Organizing Junkie who hosts Menu Plan Monday 🙂

Let me know what you think. I'd love to hear from you, but please keep it civil. Thanks!
