I don’t know why I am attracted to quizzes about decorating style…but I am. They’re fun to explore. I saw a Visual Style Quiz from Stylish Home linked to at How About Orange a while back that looked interesting. The problem was (and usually is with these things) that with most of the rooms, I didn’t totally like everything in them — I liked elements from different ones. Even going with overall feel and impression, it usually was hard to choose between a couple of them. So I took the quiz twice.
The first result came back:
Results: You most resemble a “Old Money Extravagance”.
A classic home in an established neighborhood. Your kitchen is your prize. Decorative, finished… elegant. The feminine drama of your bedroom is unmistakable. Your decorative canvas stretches to the property lines. A lady like table suitable to a royal wedding. Watch the grass grow in the hot summer sun. Pre-war, upper east side attitude. A hard-boiled cynic with a noble side – you..
Suspected “Old Money Extravagance”
- Winston Churchill
- Anthony Hopkins
- Greta Garbo
Cynic? Me? Well, maybe in some ways…not overall. But I think much of this describes me.
The second result was:
Results: You most resemble a “California Country”.
The house at the end of the lane in the village by the sea. Home cooked meals from a kitchen full of country. A bedroom with distinct character – warm and charming. Like the painter’s brush, your composition is done in living color. A sense of rolling hills and vineyards surround this table. Your 3rd coffee and just beginning to be productive. Natural and neutral… save the color for your art. A den of discussion for artists and intellectuals..
Suspected “California Country”
- Sandra Bullock
- Harrison Ford
- Jeff Bridges
A lot of this describes me, too — except I do like color in my home, but not bright splashy color.
Maybe I am just eclectic. But I struggle with pulling different styles together and wondering if it looks artfully eclectic — or a mess.
But maybe that’s why it takes me so long to figure out how I want to decorate — this liking of multiple styles. One way I’ve dealt with that is having different styles in different rooms. We don’t have any formal, company-only rooms, but the living room is a little more elegant and dressy than the others. I used to have an old-fashioned “country” look in the kitchen, which is supposedly “out” now. I don’t change my decorating every year with the styles — in fact, I usually like the furniture and decorations to stay put once I decide on them, which is another reason decorating decisions take me so long. But in our new home I am trying to scale it back a few notches, though I can’t give it up completely. I mean, why do away with a perfectly good shelf because it has a wheat design in it which “dates” it? Good reason to go with classic styles rather than trends. But who knew a wheat design would be a passing trend.
Anyway — there are weightier and worthier things to be thinking about, but I am just musing out loud today.
If you take the quiz, let me know your results.
