Sobering

I’m reading through the OT book of Zechariah during my Bible reading, and these verses from chapter 7 really convicted me this morning. I underlined the parts that particularly jumped out at me.

4 Then came the word of the LORD of hosts unto me, saying,

5 Speak unto all the people of the land, and to the priests, saying, When ye fasted and mourned in the fifth and seventh month, even those seventy years, did ye at all fast unto me, even to me?

6 And when ye did eat, and when ye did drink, did not ye eat for yourselves, and drink for yourselves?

8 And the word of the LORD came unto Zechariah, saying,

9 Thus speaketh the LORD of hosts, saying, Execute true judgment, and shew mercy and compassions every man to his brother:

10 And oppress not the widow, nor the fatherless, the stranger, nor the poor; and let none of you imagine evil against his brother in your heart.

11 But they refused to hearken, and pulled away the shoulder, and stopped their ears, that they should not hear.

12 Yea, they made their hearts as an adamant stone, lest they should hear the law, and the words which the LORD of hosts hath sent in his spirit by the former prophets: therefore came a great wrath from the LORD of hosts.

13 Therefore it is come to pass, that as he cried, and they would not hear; so they cried, and I would not hear, saith the LORD of hosts…

It’s so very easy to “refuse to hearken” in little everyday things — but every detour off the right path begins with a single step. I am so thankful God forgives and restores. I hope and pray to be more sensitive to His Spirit in my daily life.

  • Reminds me of my favorite passage, Jeremiah 2 — the rejecting of the streams of living water, the digging of broken cisterns. The “what did your fathers find wrong in me.”

  • “They made their hearts as an adamant stone”. That is a scary thought that we can do that when it comes to hearing the Lord. Makes me think of what our society in general is doing.

  • Thanks for coming by and for your sweet comment about the cake that I made for my friends birthday. We did cut it and they did eat. It was quite an experience and I’m glad that I had the opportunity.

Your blog is really lovely. I’m so happy to have found your place. I’ll be dropping in again and look forward to seeing what you have next time.

    Hugs,

  • That’s the goal we all should have. Thanks for posting the words of wisdom from the Lord.

  • It is easy to fall into not listening at the little things! and before we know it it is bigger things and then we wonder what happened!! Good Post! Love and Hugs Grams
