Katrina at Callapidder Days is hosting a Fall Into Reading challenge from Sept. 23 to Dec. 21 (there’s even a drawing for an Amazon.com gift certificate for those who post a link there by Sunday, Sept. 24). This is my kinda challenge!! I go through several books a month as it is, but there are some on my “want to read some day” list in the back of my mind that I want to include in this challenge in order to set a goal to actually get to them.
Here’s what I am hoping to read during this challenge:
Non-fiction:
For Women Only, What You Need To Know About The Inner Lives Of Men by Shaunti Feldhahn. I saw this recommended on someone’s blog a few weeks ago and it sounded worthy of checking out.
Mere Christianity by C. S. Lewis. I’ve heard it referred to for years; it just seems like something every Christian ought to be familiar with.
In the Presence of My Enemies by Gracia Burnham. I didn’t want to read it when it first came out. I had read an excerpt somewhere, and….I don’t know, maybe it seemed too close to home since the capture of the Burnhams wasn’t that long ago, and what she was wrestling with in the excerpt I read was something I would have had a hard time with. But my youth pastor recommended a DVD of her testimony, produced by New Tribes Mission, which he had seen at another church, and I was so moved by it. I think I am ready to read it now.
Bible Study:
That I May Know Him by June Kimmel, then
A Look Within by Faith Alvis Taylor.
General Fiction:
Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. This is one of those I’ve wanted to read for ages, though I’m waffling between that and Sense and Sensibility and Persuasion. Maybe I’ll just see what the library has on hand when I go.
A Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket. I thought this sounded interesting when I first heard of it, then we saw the DVD last week, and that sealed it: I want to read this series! But I’ll just put the first book here for the challenge.
Christian Fiction:
Before I Wake by Dee Henderson. Just got it yesterday!
The Brethren by Beverly Lewis. I just saw it on the CBD web site, so it should be in my neighborhood Christian bookstore soon. It’s the conclusion of the “Annie’s People” series.
Family by Karen Kingsbury, due out in October, a part of her “Firstborn” series.
Winter Birds by Jamie Langston Turner.
Then there’s my monthly magazine reading: Frontline Magazine, which I pretty much read from cover to cover, Family Fun, Romantic Homes (I read most of those, skim through parts of them), and Reader’s Digest (pick and choose from it).
That should keep my busy for a while!

I have been wanting to try Lemony Snicket, too. I’m reading some other Juvenile/YA fiction on my list, too. I also have heard wonderful things about that For Women Only book.
Hi there! Thanks for commenting on my book list, I thought I’d jump over here and see what you have. I might steal a couple of your book ideas (like the C.S. Lewis book and For Women Only). Might have to put them aside until the Winter Reading Challenge LOL!!
Great list! Good luck with the reading!!
I’ve only read one Jane Austen book, “Pride and Prejudice”, but I had a lot of fun with it! I would recommend it to you.
I hope you enjoy the Snicket books, I’ve had a lot of fun with them.
Great list, Barbara. I, too, would like to try Lemony Snicket sometime. And I was looking at the new Dee Henderson book in the bookstore the other day. But I used great self-control to put it BACK on the shelf. Let me know how it is!
Love, love Karen Kingsbury’s stuff. I’ve read the Redemption series but haven’t started the Firstborn series yet.
Very impressive list. Can’t wait to hear what you learn about the inner lives of men…lol.
Also love Jane Austen! Wish I had time but things are kind of hectic right now, nothing I can’t handle but I know my limits. hehe!
I really enjoyed In the Presence of My Enemies…well, I suppose “enjoyed” isn’t the right word. I was moved by it, very glad I read it.
What a great list! Just read For Women Only! Changed my life in a lot of areas! Love Dee Henderson & Karen Kingsbury and I’ve got the Beverly Lewis one on hold at the library! I think I’ll add that Jamie Langston Turner book to my list. Haven’t read that one by her yet. Happy Reading!
That is a really great list. You’ll LOVE Mere Christianity…At least I did. I started P and P but haven’t finished it yet. I keep putting it down and getting distracted with something else. Maybe I’ll put it on MY list.
Love Karen Kingsburys books. I had a moment of panic there, when I read Family…..thinking i didn’t know it was out yet and then you clarified it is out in October!!!
Enjoy your books.
I love most anything by Kingsbury, and I think I’m the only one in my family not to have read Mere Christianity so guess that should go on a future list of mine! The list I have now is probably too long already.
Great list!! Dee Henderson and Beverly Lewis are some of my favorite writers and I read Pride and Prejudice this summer for the first time and loved it!
I LOVE Kingsbury’s books. Many of these are ones I would have on my list if I had “room” for them!! I also have loved reading the different series by Beverly Lewis.
Happy Reading!!
I so look forward to reading Beverly Lewis’s new book. She is one of my favorite authors…couple more days til its released.
Wonderful list, and I have some on my list (not included in the challenge) that you listed. I want to read the Firstborn series, as I am a huge Karen Kingsbury fan, but I want to wait until they are all written! I bought the first book by Beverly Lewis to the Annie’s People series at a local library sale, and almost included it in the challenge. I may get to it yet!
And the Lemony Snickets books are on my “one-day, I’ll get to it list”. I bought the first 5 or 6 for some of our nieces and nephews, so I know I can borrow them anytime
Happy Reading and Happy Fall!!!
I really liked For Women Only. I did a little review (and I use that term loosely) on my blog. It goes into not only the “what” of what men think, but the “why.” I hope you like the book!
I’m reading Mere Christianity now, for the first time. I love it so far!
I’ve always wanted to read Pride and Prejudice.
Happy Fall!
Happier reading!!!
The Shaunti Feldheim book is a great one! There is also a men’s version out now. Although I LOVE all Austen books Persuasion is her best and her last but you won’t go wrong no matter what you decide
I’ve never read a Kingsbury book but a lot of people have mentioned her so I think I must check her out. Thanks!
Great list! I just wanted to encourage you to read Series of Unfortunate Events. I LOVE these books. They are really unique, with a clever plot and a ton of adventures. I am reading them to my kids and have to admit I got hooked! Have fun!
Thanks for commenting! I have always intended to read Mere Christianity, too. I guess it will have to wait until the NEXT challenge! Have fun reading!
I loved reading Lemony Snicket. I think I read the first 8 or so before I stopped. Quick, easy, fun reads. I’m still working on my list, but I’m thinking something by CS Lewis will be there also.
Looks like a great list! I love Mere Christianity; I’ve read it 3 times. I also loves The Problem of Pain, by CS Lewis. It’s very weighty, but a great book.
This is a great list. C. S. Lewis is my favorite writer.

[...] We used to go often when my kids were younger, but we don’t go often any more. I went a few weeks ago to get a few books on my Fall reading list, but that was the first time in ages. [...]
[...] One of the books on my fall reading list was Gracia Burnham’s In the Presence of My Enemies. I had heard of it and seen it a few years ago and somewher read an excerpt from it, but I avoided reading it. I couldn’t face it. I’m not sure why: maybe because it was too fresh, maybe because the people responsible for the Burnham’s captivity were still alive (maybe not the specific people, but the extremist Islamic groups are still active), maybe because in the portion that I read, Gracia was having to deal with something that I struggle with. But our youth pastor saw a DVD presentation of Gracia sharing her testimony at another church where he was ministering and recommended it to me. I ordered it, watched it, and was so touched on so many levels. I then felt that I had to read the book. [...]
[...] I haven’t updated my sidebar yet, but I have finished all the books on my fall reading list except C. S. Lewis’s Mere Christianity. It’s one I want to read but I’ve been distracted by other books, usually fiction. I want to post short reviews or comments on the books I have read when Callapidder Days’ Fall Into Reading Challenge ends later this month, but there are a few books along the way that I want to say a little more about.
