The Secret Life of Becky Miller

August 6, 2006 by Barbara H.

I love to read, and discussing a book with other people adds to the enjoyment of it! From time to time as I finish a book, I’ll post a few thoughts about it. I’d love to hear your comments!
I just recently finished a book called The Secret Life of Becky Miller by Sharon Hinck. I had never heard of it or her, but came across it while browsing at the local Christian bookstore.

Each chapter starts with Becky in an imaginary scenario that has something to do with that chapter (think “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty”). Becky is a Christian mom of three children who coordinates the women’s ministries at her church and wants to do “Big Things for God.”

There are a couple of reactions early in the book that I felt were a little immature — but that’s part of what this book is about: maturing into trusting God to accomplish things His way rather than getting upset with Him when things don’t go the way we think they should.

In one of my favorite parts, she was describing having one fussy daughter begging for a cookie before dinner, falling over a toy in the floor, picking up a crying baby from his nap, smelling the soup getting scorched on the stove, hearing the phone ring, and becoming aware that the baby needed a diaper change, and she said, “Motherhood is all about triage.” That cracked me up — it’s so true.

This book really brought back the angst of those early days with young children, feeling pulled in all sorts of directions and trying to figure out how to keep it all together, trying to figure out how to serve God, and learning to wait and let Him lead rather than trying to forge ahead and “make it happen.” Sharon conveys it all with warmth and humor. Often as I read, I thought, “Yes! I felt just that way!”

    Thanks for mentioning the book!
Okay, I confess, I was snooping for comments about how the book is being received – even though I PROMISED my husband I’d stop doing that (it’s a little like eavesdropping). The book is only about two months old, and it’s my debut novel (although I have several more coming out in the next couple years, including a sequel with Becky) so I keep checking to see if anyone is reading it. :-)
Anyway, I’m so delighted you could relate to Becky’s struggles and growth.
    BLESSINGS, and happy blogging!
    Sharon

Wow! I am so honored that you stopped by! I think I did see on christianbook.com that there was another Becky Miller book coming. I’ll be looking for your name there and on the shelves in my Christian bookstore. Keep up the good work!

I’m off to peruse your web site now….

(P.S. If I had published a book, I’d be doing the same thing. :) )
